The Tale of the Empty Cafeteria
October 11th, 2011 | Posted by in People TalesI work in a complex of buildings that take up an entire city block and they are all connected to a large central cafeteria. Most of my shifts take place in the evenings so I rarely see the caf when it’s full of people.
However, since I got my iPad, I’ve been spending my breaks in the cafeteria because it’s completely empty and quiet. I read, watch videos and work on various projects. It’s really nice to have an hour away from the studio to relax.
Except on one particular day, a random man (let’s call him Captain Awkward) had a similar plan. I understand it’s not my personal workspace but at least I had a quiet corner claimed. Out of all the tables Captain Awkward could have picked, he chose a seat two tables away from me… And he was facing me!
Why did he have to face me!? How uncomfortable is that?
In all honesty, it didn’t annoy as much as it fascinated me. Was it his regular table? Maybe he had to sit there. What if he felt like I intruded on his quiet cafeteria? Still, isn’t he aware that it’s socially unacceptable to sit so close to someone when there are at least 20-30 better selections? It’s tough not to make eye contact when someone is staring right at you eating baked penne. (Which actually looked delicious.)
Seriously, why did he pick that seat?
The more I thought about it, the more uncomfortable I became so I decided to retreat back to the studio for the remainder of my break.
You won that round Captain Awkward…
XTRA | I feel this scene from Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle sums things up pretty well.
